CONCRETE AFFECTION – ZOPO LADY

This project by Kiluanji Kia Henda is a poetic journey into a moment in time and space, both utopian and dystopian: 1975 in Luanda, Angola’s capital. After a liberation war and the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, it is the year before Angola finally became independent from its colonizer. The film describes an choking condition from the perspective of a Portuguese individual who is about to leave the country where he lived his whole live and who contrary to the independent Angolans who lived a utopian moment, saw no future. But he also doesn’t know where to go. Inspired by the first chapter of the book of the Polish journalist and writer Rychard Kapuscinsky, “Another Day of Life – Angola 1975”, this film also transports the images of modernist architecture of Luanda into the past. At the start of the projection the narrator wakes up from a nightmare, only to see that reality is just as hopeless as his dream world. It is his last day in the city and he is hesitant to leave.

SYBILLE BAURIEDL

Sybille Bauriedl is a geographer, researcher and activist on questions of urban development, economic globalisation, global environmental change and gender relations. Her spatial focus on cities is interrelated with perspectives on global relations and post-colonial condition. The last years she did research on energy and climate discourses for a deeper understanding of new global power geometries of exploitation and accumulation. Sybille Bauriedl works as senior researcher at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies with a project on international climate policy and its translation into national and local policy. Kenya is her main case study. Additionally she works as lecturer at the geography departments of Hamburg University and Bonn University. She published widely on cities, gender and environment. Her new book „Wörterbuch Klimadebatte“ (transcript-Verlag) will be released in November 2015.

FABIO VANIN

Fabio Vanin is an architect and urban designer, holding a PhD in Urbanism from University Iuav of Venice, completed in 2008 with the thesis “Maputo Open City – Investigations on an African Capital City”. He worked as project leader for several strategic plans in Europe (Antwerp, Gent, Gorzow, Poznan) and Africa (Nairobi), and as research assistant at TU Eindhoven and at University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In 2009 he co-founded LATITUDE – Platform for Urban Research and Design, where he is currently involved in an international comparative research on water based urbanism, “Floating Urbanism”. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Landscape Urbanism at the Vrjie Univrsiteit Brussel.

JAMES MURIUKI

James Muriuki is a Nairobi based art practitioner who has primarily used photography and lens-based media in his work. His practice constantly revolves around the transition of society through specific objects that are often the extension of personal and communal bearings. His works explore the confluence of inter-dependent happenings in an ever-changing social landscape. He uses forms such as architecture and constructions as visual elements and metaphorical symbols that are an illustration of human capacity, desire and aspirations.

He is also interested in experimenting with and investigating the potential of images, specifically photography and motion, video, sound as mediums and processes of making art and ultimately as a knowledge reservoirs and transmission channels.

James’ work has been exhibited and collected in many countries and included in several publications. He has collaborated with artists, attended residencies and workshops in several countries as well as being a grants recipient. He has curated several exhibitions individually and collaboratively in Nairobi and abroad.
